Migration to Nasuni

Are you switching over to Nasuni or thinking about it?

GS RichCopy 360 has been optimized to migrate your files shares to Nasuni. Especially, when it comes to NTFS permissions and dataset migration.

It is important as you attempt the migration to break your data into smaller sets. Basically, enough to fill up only as much as your on-prem Nasuni cache size is set to. Of course, Nasuni offered dedup and compression, but you do not want to fill up the cache with more data than it can handle.

This is an issue we see with repeated clients. What you are supposed to do is copy the data to fill the cache, then wait until Nasuni completes a snapshot (you can trigger it manually). Once the snapshot is complete, then you can start you second batch.

Alternatively, your other option is to start off the migration with a larger cache just for the sake of the migration so that you have larger dataset to copy. Once the migration completes, you could resize the cache to original size you had planned.

Server Migration – Getting off 2008 R2

The time is clicking as more and more system administrators are migrating from windows servers 2008 R2. We are seeing more administrators migrating to Windows Server 2016 than ever before. This is mainly because Windows Server 2016 has shown to be a lot more robust than its predecessor (Windows 2012 R2). Furthermore, a lot more trusted than Windows Server 2019.

As a company in the technology field, we are always evaluating and testing the latest. So most of our servers are running windows server 2019.

According to our system administrators, windows server 2019 has been the most stable they have seen and its performance is far more superior to all previous windows versions including windows server 2016.

However, one of the main obstacles that could prevent system administrators to go to windows server 2019 is not only the skepticism to jump to the latest. It could very well be not compatible with the software applications that are supposed to be loaded on it. Software vendors do not certify their software fast enough or at times they may need to make changes.

As a company that specializes in data migration, we start to test our products since the tech preview II of any operating system. This is mainly because we need to ensure that we are fully compatible with the latest operating system the day it launches.

With that said, we do want to share that we noticed the speed in data copying to windows server 2019 when you compare it to windows server 2016 was that windows server 2019 was about 6 times faster. This alone makes an appealing argument to switch files servers to windows server 2019 instead.

Of course, make sure you do your own testing before you go to production.

[Solved] Access Denied When Copying Files – no NTFS permissions

Not every server migration is the same, and each one can have its own challenges and issues while some can go smooth and painless. However, hoping for a smooth file server migration and planning for the worst is probably the smarter approach for any IT admin.

We have seen several customers report that they could not migrate files where they do not have NTFS permissions to. However, they were still part of the local administrators group on those windows servers. They kept receiving access denied error messages to files and folders where they had no NTFS access.

Access Denied Error

Fortunately, GS RichCopy 360 utilizes administrator override when an access denied error is exhibited. This grants us special access to read and copy the file from source to destination. This way customers were able to overcome such errors and get their migration going smoothly and painlessly.

RSYNC for Windows and CWRSync

Many of our customers choose GS RichCopy 360 Enterprise as an alternative for RSYNC for Windows.

RSYNC for windows is a great tool do not get me wrong. The main problem with it is that it lacks the performance that is offered in today’s technology and the fact that it is not very intuitive to get it working properly.

Data Replication – Best Disaster Recovery Plan

Data (files and folders) on servers have grown exponentially in the last 10 to 15 years. An office with 150 users would have an average data of 250 to 400 GB back around the year 2000. Nowadays, an office of a 150 users could easily average 1.5 to 2TB worth of data. This is of course contributed to many reasons such as higher resolution graphics, more reliance on digital forms, departments and companies wanting to go completely paperless.

Backup remote machines and VIPs across the Internet

Telecommuters and people working permanently from home have become part of the norm in more and more companies every year. While there are many advantages to offering such a privilege to employees, it does present its own share of challenges to  IT departments.

One of the main challenges presented is how to backup remote machines as relying on the users to do it themselves almost never works out and in the event of a harddrive crash, data corruption, accidental deletion, or getting data infected with a virus, the IT department will always have to assume the responsibility of recovering the data somehow.

Copy data from Amazon AWS EC2 to the datacenter

It is has been very common to see companies and organizations take advantage of deploying virtual machine instances in Amazon EC2 cloud. The main obstacle they face is how to keep the data on these servers backed up in their own company’s data center as a way of backup. It could also be the other way around where data needs to be replicated from their datacenter to VMs deployed in Amazon EC2 connected via VPN tunnel.

GS RichCopy 360 Enterprise has helped many customers facing these challenges by replicating files and folders (data) between their datacenter and the Amazon AWS EC2 cloud. GS RichCopy 360 Enterprise offers features like copying files over a single TCP port where the client gets installed on the source and a lightweight agent gets installed on the destination and data is transmitted between them. To conserve on bandwidth consumption, GS RichCopy 360 Enterprise comes with byte-level replication where only the deltas in the file are sent instead of sending the whole file every time it is changed.
